May 31, 2011 -- Memorial Day Weekend brought us an early taste of summer and significant sun exposure. Make sure you avoid painful sunburns that can increase your risk of skin cancer. There are many sunscreen preparations that are no longer greasy and are quite easy to apply. A major risk factor for developing skin cancer is a blistering sunburn before age 18. Please protect your children as well!

Speaking of children, please plan ahead for any school physicals for the 2011-2012 academic year. Schedule the appointments now to avoid missing the deadline.

Please be aware that there are some updates in vaccination requirements before school entry this fall:

bullet    Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis) booster for all children entering 6th grade. (Required)

The following are suggested by the Centers for Disease Control:

bullet    A second Varicella (Chicken Pox) Vaccination is recommended before kindergarten.
bullet    The Meningitis Vaccine (Meningococcemia) is now recommended between the ages of 11-18 with a booster 5 years after the first one.
bullet    Gardasil (HPV) is recommended for all females over age 11.
